SERVPRO Says Check Your Roof for Drainage to Prevent Water Damage

SERVPRO Offers Tips to Prevent Water Damage

For most properties, water damage can be caused by a number of things. While some causes, such as burst pipes or clogged sewer lines, are rather obvious, other conditions may go undetected until they have produced significant damage. The following takes a look at the most common causes of water damage that often go undetected.
Leaking Pipes
Leaking pipes cannot only cause substantial water damage in Mehlville, but they can also be responsible for the growth of mold in your home. Regarding water damage, a slight continuous drip can ruin floors, walls, and cabinets, especially if they go unrepaired for an extended period. Unfortunately, leaks are not always easily recognizable, so you should be familiar with possible signs of a leak. They include low water pressure, water with a brown or yellowish tinge, a linger earthy or musty odor, stains on the ceiling, floors, or walls, and walls with blistering wallpaper or paint. Our SERVPRO technicians have special devices for the detection of hidden moisture.
A Flat Roof
Although flat roofs usually have a barely noticeable gradient to them that allows water to run off, the slight slope can be blocked by debris and branches or even deteriorate over time. In either case, water can collect on top of it. With nowhere to go, the standing water can cause water damage to the roof and ceiling, which may result in a leak or crack in your ceiling. SERVPRO suggests having your roof checked regularly.
While your gutters are meant to direct water away from a structure, they can easily become clogged by debris. If the rubble isn’t removed, the water can overflow the edges of the gutter and run down the structure’s side or access the roof through the soffits. Also, if a gutter becomes cracked, water will leak directly down the side of the structure and pool around the base, which can result in basement leaks and water damage to the foundation. To decrease the chances of this happening, be sure to have your gutters cleaned on a routine basis and install leaf guards if applicable.
